APSE Launches Partnership with GettingHired.com

Rockville, MD, February 15, 2011 – APSE has recently partnered with GettingHired.com, a private sector initiative helping to lead the effort to close the employment participation gap for people with disabilities while helping employers meet the challenge of finding qualified workers. Recently recognized as the 2010 Market Share Corporation of the Year by the US Business Leadership Network, GettingHired.com is the largest and most extensive national employment and networking portal connecting talented job seekers who happen to have disabilities, employers and jobs, agencies providing services to the community of people with disabilities, college and university disability and career services departments, veterans groups and disability advocacy groups. The APSE and GettingHired.com collaborative mission is to create sustainable employment growth and opportunities for citizens with disabilities.

Through this collaboration, APSE members have the opportunity to offer the people with disabilities they serve an easy to use, fully accessible and free resource to assist in finding employment at http://www.GettingHired.com/apse.  APSE members now will also have access to all of the career tools and informational resources and 24/7 connection to the job listings offered by GettingHired.com.  APSE member organizations will also have the ability to post job openings and to search the nation’s largest database of resumes of talented people with disabilities at GettingHired.com. In addition APSE and GettingHired.com will be working collaboratively to identify and add new employers to the GettingHired.com community, further expanding the employment opportunities available to people with disabilities.

MEPI Policy Briefs and Final Report Available on Website

The MN Employment Policy Initiative (MEPI) has completed its nine policy briefs on doubling employment of Minnesotans with disabilities by 2015 and also its final report detailing the common themes across groups.  The policy briefs and final report are based on listening sessions with the groups listed below:

AAIDD Research Delegation to Cuba Announced

AAIDD has partnered with Professionals Abroad to offer an exciting opportunity for professionals in the field of intellectual and developmental disabilities to conduct professional research and exchange during a 5-day delegation to Havana, Cuba: October 16-21, 2011.  AAIDD is also pleased to manage a scholarship competition on behalf of Professionals Abroad to award one scholarship to a graduate student to participate.

Self -Employment News from WI

Thirty-two-year-old Lisa Gilson keeps an active schedule. She bowls, plays tennis and basketball, and is in her second term as president of the advocacy group People First Wisconsin.

Since June, she has also been running her own paper shredding business, Lisa's Affordable Shredding, located along Hwy. 51 South in Minocqua.

Lisa's range of activities is impressive, and anyone who saw her resumé would no doubt be surprised to learn that Lisa has an intellectual disability.
