APSE on the Hill
On Tuesday, APSE’s Laura Owens and Ryley Newport met with U.S. Representative Cathy McMorris-Rodgers (R-WA) and her point person on disability issues, Karen Summar, M.D. APSE and the CPSD are planning on coordinating future efforts to promote Employment First following the leadership of Rep. McMorris-Rodgers and her excellent staff.

N.J. Official reconsiders phasing out the state’s large sheltered workshop program
New Jersey Human Services Commissioner Jennifer Velez has been reported saying she would consider dropping her controversial proposal to phase out financial support for sheltered workshops, after much pressure from concerned family members and outside interest groups. Although this may not be bad news, APSE sees this as a representation of the problem of low expectations and the belief, held by some, that people are “too disabled” for competitive employment and independent living. Maine Lawmaker proposes Employment First legislation
After almost three years of hard work, Maine's Employment First bill continues to gain support and receives an enthusiastic reception at a legislative hearing last week. 40 people spoke in favor of the bill and no one in opposition.
