Introduction

Conference and Training Committee:

The Conference and Training Committee is keenly focused to further APSE’s commitment to providing leadership, direction and resources to support membership training and development. Our current efforts are targeted to two of our committee’s main objectives:

  • Developing and delivering a high quality, premier annual national employment conference and,
  • Developing and implementing a Supported Employment Professional certification.

National APSE Conference

APSE supports the only annual national conference focused solely on the advancement of integrated employment.  For the past 22 years, the National APSE Conference has brought together business and community leaders from across the country to network and focus on state of the art strategies to ensure equitable employment for citizens with disabilities.

The 23rd Annual Conference theme says it all - Employment First: A Capitol Idea! And now is the time to focus our energies on ensuring all people with disabilities have meaningful opportunities to bring their talents to the workplace. The conference will open with Temple Grandin, author, professor at Colorado State University College of Agricultural Sciences, and international speaker on the topic of autism and employment. Dr. Grandin, named one of TIME magazine’s “100 Most Influential People in the World” in 2010, will present “Learning Skills and Obtaining Employment for People with Autism and Asperger’s Syndrome.”

Employment Support Professional Certification

In October 2010, the APSE Board of Directors created the nation's first employment support certification program. APSE established the Employment Support Professional Certification Council (ESPCC)* for this purpose, in compliance with the Guidelines of the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA), the accrediting body of the Institute for Credentialing Excellence (ICE). APSE is collaborating with national leaders and practitioners in the field of integrated employment to develop, pilot, validate, and implement a national examination that will be available to all states and interested persons in 2012.

APSE fast-tracked the development of ESPCC’s Certified Employment Support Professional exam thanks to funding support from key stakeholders. Indiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Arkansas awarded APSE grants from their Medicaid Infrastructure Grants (MIG) programs.  On December 2, 2011 New Hampshire became the first state to sponsor the CESP exam and subsequently award the first CESP credential.  Several states will also offer locally sponsored exam sessions this year, and the exam will be available during the APSE’s Annual Pre-Conference Day on June 26, 2012 in Arlington, Virginia for all eligible candidates.

The CESP credential was developed for job coaches, job developers, transition employment specialists, job placement personnel, and employment specialists/consultants who provide employment services to individuals with a variety of disabilities.
