The 21st Annual National APSE Conference will take place from June 8 – 10, 2010 in Atlanta, GA. The APSE conference focuses exclusively on employment of people with disabilities in the community, and it is the premier event for sharing knowledge, expertise and ideas on the latest and best innovations to make employment for all a reality.

Announcing:  APSE 2010 National Conference Keynote Presentations

Opening Keynote:  Community Conversations
Presented by Cesilee Coulson and Laura Owens

The winds of change are blowing our field in a new and exciting direction.  Change requires meaningful conversations-to help us understand what is happening, to learn from each other, and to find ways to move forward using the insight and knowledge of those interested in the issues facing our field.  As an organization, APSE is experiencing a renewed commitment to advancing employment for citizens with disabilities.  We have begun to engage APSE Members in this commitment through Community Conversations focusing on three questions:  What time is it?, What do you need to learn, re-learn or unlearn?, What is your first BOLD move?  We hope you leave with a sense of renewal and urgency to move to action with your bold move.

No Excuses!
Presented by:  Kyle Maynard, Motivational Speaker

Kyle Maynard has a congenital defect that robbed him of arms from below the elbows and his legs from below the knees. But this hasn’t stopped him from becoming a winning high school wrestler, weightlifter, gifted student – and example to everyone who meets him. In this moving and eloquent presentation full of examples from his life, Maynard outlines how his "No Excuses" philosophy helps him meet the numerous challenges that confront him daily, showing audiences how they too can overcome the great challenges in their own lives – and succeed.

Employment First: Social Capital & Our New Roles
Presented by: Cary Griffin, Senior Partner
Griffin-Hammis Associates, LLC & The Center for Social Capital, Inc.

The national conversation about Employment First that APSE is leading is revitalizing policy and practice. Some worry that customized community employment will be too expensive and difficult for everyone, even though we already managed to erect a parallel system of some 5,000 sheltered programs, our own transit systems, and housing that mimics but often precludes real life in our communities. This session uses humor, national examples, and strong evidence to illuminate: critical economic leverage points for success; the unlimited ways to make a living in this world, new skills we each need for customizing employment; augmenting self-advocacy & family power; how Bridging & Bonding Social Capital help make sheltered/segregated work models irrelevant; why running parallel systems is too expensive and unproductive to continue; that hiring someone remains both a personal and an economic decision for employers; and why fear keeps us running the same old expensive programs.

National Award Nominations - Deadline March 5th

It is that time of the year again when we need to put on our thinking caps and nominate those individuals; agencies and employers who we feel should be honored at this year’s national conference in June in Atlanta.  Last year we honored 40; this year it would be great if we could honor 50.  There are many people/agencies/employers who are doing great things towards advancing employment, connecting people in our states; we need to recognize them for all that they do.

If you have any questions please contact Vic Gable or Pat Gutowski, we would be happy to assist you.
